Soccer player accepted
PA Hamilton The Government has provided one of the country’s top soccer players, Kieth Nelson. with a Christmas present — New Zealand citizenship. The move has opened the way for the former Scotland semi-professional captain to play for New Zealand in the World Cup series in March. “This is great news—l’ve been waiting eight months for word about it,” said Nelson yesterday. “It makes all the training worthwhile. I would not have been, able to play for New Zealand if I had not become a citizen." Nelson last season notched 74 goals for the Hamilton side, setting a record as the highest scorer in the Northern League history.
Tennis.—The top seeded players, Barry Smith (South Australia) and Marion Mills (Well lington). advanced through to the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s events at the New Zealand Maori tennis championships at Kamo; Whangarei, yesterday.
