Cyclone damage put at $8M
NZPA Brisbane Cyclone Ted caused more than SBM damage as it swept over Mornington Island. Burketown, and Karumba, in Queensland, at the week-end, according to preliminary estimates. The Queensland Premier (Mr Joh Bjelke-Petersen) said that more than half the damage was centred on Mornington Island, the first inhabited area to be struck by the cyclone. Speaking to Brisbane reporters, Mr Bjelke-Petersen said that an initial task force group was being assembled, and would be flown into the area today. The premier said he would inspect the area as soon as practical — probably tomorrow.
