Many claim for damage
A spokesman for the Earthquake and War Damage Commission said that the commission’s telephones had been going all day with calls from people in the flood-affected areas, lodging claims for damage to property. He said the commission would not be able to consider the claims until the full extent of the damage was known. The commission shares the cost of claims with insurance companies. Normally insurance cover against floods is confined to buildings and does not recognise claims for damage to fences, gardens, or anything outside a house.
