West Coast forests
Sir, — The three land deals recently announced in South Westland show the contempt in which the Forest Service holds the people of New Zealand. More forest is to be given to the sawmillers at Okarito, Haast and Waiho and again the public is presented with a fait accompli. One would have thought that the Forest Service had got the message about the special values of the forest round Okarito Lagoon. This is an area being considered for national park status. By the time the longawaited management plan
for South Westland is published next year, all the substantial decisions will have been made. The sawmillers are being well looked after by the Forest Service and when all the best forests have been handed over to them, the crumbs will no doubt be allocated for conservation. — Yours, etc., A. J. CRAIG. December 15, 1976,
