Last month, the council said the work would cost about $18,500, but board members said their share should have an upper limit of $7OOO. A report from the Chief Engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) said the estimate was too high, and the council would recover some of its share from subsidy. Work done along the southern bend of the river would be done to such a standard that it would not have to be taken up when a carriageway is built in the future. Board members said they would pay the share on the condition that work is don.e during the 1977-78 financial vear. They would orefer it to be done in the first half of the year.
