Youth to defend murder charge
A 19-j ear-old youth accused of murdering John Frederick Gillard at the house occupied by the Templeton Motor-Cycle Club has elected trial by jury In the Supreme Court on the charge. Gary Twyman pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder before Mr F. G. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to December 20 for the taking of depositions before a Magistrate. Counsel for Twyman,
(Mr K. N. Hampton) said the hearing would take two days. Gillard was found dead about 4 a.m. on November 27 in a house at Hewitts Road, Merivale, where a party was held the night before. Although the house is occupied by the Templeton Motor-Cycle Club, the police have said that gang rivalry played no part in the shooting. It is believed Gillard was shot in the stomachafter an argument with another person at the party.
