Soviet Union
Sir, — M. Creel’s claim about Soviet opposition to European colonialism and its interest in helping other country’s maintain their independ-
ence would be amusing if it were not tragic. For within the Soviet Union’s own borders are regions that have had their independence taken from them by force of arms. The classic examples will always remain Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. I know a man who just escaped from Latvia in time when the Russians invaded after World War II — his two brothers were packed off to Siberia where one of them died. For proof of Soviet imperialism, M. Creel need only talk to Latvian immigrants to this country. The intensity of their bitterness towards the Soviet Union will surely surprise one so convinced of that nation’s righteousness. — Yours, etc.,
I. BEMOSE. December 4, 1976.
