Rape within marriage

Sir, — R. M. Taylor quoted Peter but ignored verse one, which refuted equality, and ignored Ephesians 5, “wives submit yourselves unto your husbands . . . For the husband is the head of the wife.” Paul then admonished husbands to care for wives, but there was no suggestion of equality. Again in Corinthians II Paul said “the head of the woman is the man... a man is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man.” I can only remain Christian because Jesus regarded women as equal. The Christian Church, however, has been dogged by the ambivalence of Paul and Peter, who being Greek and Jew respectively, first, and then Christians, used Christianity to enforce Greek and Jewish cultural practices. Unfortunately it is this, not Christian teaching which has set the pattern for Mr Taylor’s “Bible marriage.” His “modern marriage” may be the more truly Christian and equal. — Yours, etc., B. ROBERTS. December 4. 1976.
