Halswell pool hit by vandals

Vandnls in Paparua County damaged public property in two separate incidems recently. The council’s reserves and domains committee was toid that during Show Week-end, stakes and trees had been broken in Gouidtag Avenue, and that vandals broke into the Halsweil swimming pool. Glass from light bulbs and broken bowls worth $7O littered the main pool. The police have not been able to find the culprits. In other business, the councilors decided not to proceed with proposals to revoke the pedestrian accessway between Hei Hei Road and Wycola Park and the Kathleen Crescent Reserve. Thrre has been strong public disapproval of the plans, with petitions from local residents.

Councillor J. C. Wilson expressed concern about people walking along the railway line near the Kathleen Crescent reserve. Other councillors were sympathetic, but said the council should not have to fence off the back of Denton Park to stop this happening. The annual street and garden competition in the county will be held again next year. Judging will be in the second week of February. Prizes will be given for the best garden in the Sockburn, Hornby, and Halswell communities and in the rural ridings. Gardens on farm properties will be judged as well, as will the best industrial garden and the best street. There will be a special prize for the garden contest in 1978, when Hornby will celebrate its centenary.
