Ragnotti wins rally
NZPA-Reuter, Noumea. Jean Ragnotti, of France won a specially organised run-off in the New Caledonian Safari after all drivers | failed to qualify for the Ithird stage. The run-off, called an i* epilogue” by the organisers, (started over a 1285 km (course prepared for the third stage. Earlier, all competitors; had failed to complete the (second stage within the time i limit laid down, provoking criticism from drivers that it had been too difficult and ! badly organised. Ragnotti, who finished the I i rally in 22 hours 51 minutes, ■ ; was followed by Stakha Metha, of Kenya, in second place. Doug Stewart, of Australia, in a Mitsubishi Lancer finished fifth in a time! of 23 hours one minute and; 11 seconds. The Australian champion,; Ross Dunkerton, abandoned; the rally at the beginning of; the epilogue for technical I reasons and the New Zealand champion Mike Marshall, ran off the road near 'the end. forcing him to; iabandon it.
