Lance Cross seen as bad choice
PA Wellington Criticism of the appointment of Mr Lance Cross as chairman of the Council for Recreation and Sport has been voiced by the president of the Citizens Association for Racial Equality (Mr T. 0. Newnham). Mr Newnham said the appointment "casts yet another long shadow of doubt on the Government’s sincerity on the question of New Zea-! land’s sporting ties with! South Africa.” Mr Cross, as a member of ; the International Olympic I Committee, had consistently] been a leader in the battle for special privileges for 1 South African white sports-] men, he said. Mr Newnham said Mr, Cross’s own sincerity was not in question. His appointment, "ill-conceived and illtimed,” however, would be regarded as a slap in the face to African and Third World countries which were working for equality for all sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere.
