Brilliant 47.4 sec 400m run by Richard Goldstone

By

ROD DEW

Displaying maturity and pace judgment far beyond his 17 years, Richard Goldstone (Avon) defeated some of the finest long sprinters in the country' in winning the senior 400 m in the A.N.Z. Bank track and field league at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

His lime of 47.45ec wax the fxvtest recorded in New Zealand at any <evel thia season, and was only three-tenths of a second slower than the Canterbury senior record set by Trevor C - hrane High School Old Bovs) three years ago. It also represented an improvement on the New Zealand junior record 'under 19t of 47.95ec «hich Goldstone set at the same venue three weeks ago. However, because it was set in a senior race it will go unrecognised as far as the record books are concerned.

Nevertheless, nothing could detract from the excellence of his performance “I am very pleased, and a tittle surprised, he said afterwards “I was feeling very tired beforehand but tomelimes you can run well even when vou don’t feel Like it”

ilia coach, Mr Paul Davies, was also pleased. “This was the first time he has started in a race and not been fairly certain of winning. AU his other fast times have been done without any strong opposition.” But If it was a moment of triumph for Goldstone it was a race of some disappointment for Jeff Bailey (Old Boys>. who was runner-up In the New Zealand senior championship last season and is regarded as a leading contender this - imirer Bailey finished second in 48.3 sec. He beaded of* an illustrious field which included Cochrane, Andrew Stark •Cnrversity-Shirleyi, Grant Anderson .Old Boys, and the national 400 metres hurdles champion. David Long (Old 80-, s But on recent form he anould have done even better. Baney has had difficulty concentrating on his training -and racing since the cancellation of the New Zealand Games and his performance on Saturday was clearlv a reflection of this. “It knocked all the stuffing out of me But I am glad I was beaten. Now 1 can put that behind me and get down to the business of preparing nr self for the national championships.” Bailey first Nevertheless, Bailey also had his moment of triumph earlier in the day He stormed to victory n the senior Ivu metres sprint. beating the former national junior champion, Andy von Biel <O!d Boysi, and the prominent University sprinter, Jan Fe.-guson by a stride. What was even more pleasing for Bailey was the time — lO.Ssec. Ibis was only a tenth of a second outside his best and an indication that he is coming up to his best sprinting form right on schedule.

In the 4uo metres race. Bailey related his early pace to that of C sihrane, who is now an 800 metres specialist and no longer training for sprints. It was the mistake which cost him the race. He was catching his junior rival, Goldstone, up the finishing straight but had no hope whatsoever of closing the substantial gap which had opened up when the field straightened up for the final straight. The Farmers’ “Athlete of the

Week” awards went to Janice Bishop (Technical) and Craig skelton (Cashmere). Miss Bishop earned her award for her fine throw of 37.64 metres in the senior women’s javelin and for her performance of 11.60 metres in the under 18 shot. The only person to better this effort in the senior shot was the incomparable Vai Young (Technical), who recorded 13.69 metres. Unlucky lumper Skelton bettered the under 16 high jump record with an excellent leap of 1.76 metres. Unfortunately, the wind blew the bar off its supports before officials had a chance to check the height and it will not be considered for record purposes. 11 okellon iiad good cause to be disappointed, he had the conI solation of knowing that he was ,1101 alone in the loss ot a record, stepneu McKee (Toe H) bettered the under-18 triple jump record with his winning leap of 13.41 metres. However, the wind gauge was not operating at the time of his jump — it was required for another event being held simultaneously — and the distance will not be accepted as a record.

Yet another young athlete to exceed a record was H. Lilley (Old Boysi in the under 16 100 metres hurdles. He recorded 14.9sei. Tne wind gauge was not operating on this occasion, either, but it was obvious that there was a substantial tail wind.

Ken Simpson (Toe H), a former New Zealand hurdles and triple Jump champion, made his first appearance in competition of the season and left no doubts that he would be a force to contend with once again. He won both the llu metres hurdles and the triple jump—an event he has often avoided in recent seasons because of a fear ot a recurrence of an old ankle injury.

The former Isle of Man Commonwealth Games representative, Allan Callow (UnlversityShirley;, was a comfortable winner of the 3000 metres walk in 14min 3.Bsec. Bernie Harland (Technical) maintained his position on the top of the hammer throwing pedestal with a good distance of 56.08 metres.

busan Burnside (Technical) won the senior women’s 100 metres sprint by a stride from her team-mate. Bev Peterson. Her winning time of 12sec was a good one but Miss Burnside was unable to contest any jumping events because of a hamstring problem which first made itself known the previous week. Two other prominent Technical athletes were also handicapped. The New Zealand decathlon champion, Mene Mene. started in the high jump but withdrew and did not compete in anything else. He is suffering from a leg injury. Joanna Burr (nee Beckett! was another on the sidelines. She was recovering from a minor infection. Technical wins Technical won the right to represent Canterbury in the national club final at Hastings in April when it won the A.N.Z. Bank major league competition. It finished the four days of competition with 437 points but at the end was not so far ahead of the young Avon club that it could be entriely comfortable about the future. Avon scored 378 points. Third place was shared by Toe H and High School Old Boys with 260.

The minor league was won by St Bede’s College with 88 points Cashmere was second with 70 and Christ’s College third with 48. St Margaret’s College was next with 38. Abbreviations used in the following results are: Avon (A.), Cashmere (Cash.), Christ’s College (C.C.), Christchurch (Chch), High School Old Boys (H. 5.0.8.
