Grey Way only sixth
PA Auckland The Washdyke gelding, Grey Way. finished sixth in the Owens Stakes, won by Oranmore, at Ellerslie on Saturday. Grev Wav, hanging one way then the other, failed to race at all generously. His trainer, E. P. Corby, after a discussion with the horse's rider. R. J. Skelton, abandoned plans to continue with the horse at Avondale. Instead Grey Way will be taken to Otaki for the Topsy Stakes, a weight-for-age 1600 m event at Otaki on December 11. Vice Regal, the favourite, finished tentli in the Owens ’ The rider of Vice Regal, G. R. i Edge, said his mount “blew a bit” afterwards but he could offer no real explanation for the colt's dismal performance. “'He was gone at the 800. never travelling well.” Edge said. “I just hope he is all right.” After hearing from Edge the judicial committee reported: “It would seem apparent that the incident ipresumably the colt's bolting in training) during the recent Canterbun meeting maybe still having its effect and added to this is the fact that during the rest period subsequent to the Canterbury Incident Vice Regal’s condition may have become gross.”
