Malaysian student cuts opposed
The Lincoln College Students’ Association has opposed the Government’s decision to reduce the numbers of Malaysian students studying in New Zealand next year. Universities have beer asked to reconsider their quo tas because of the decisior to reduce the intake of stud ents from any one country tf 40 per cent of the total of overseas students. The president of the asso ciation (Mr R. M. Bucknail said that the student quotr at the college had not beet affected because intake wanot high before the reassess ment, but the association op posed the cuts on principle The cuts had been suddenly, he said, not givinj contributing countries tim< to increase applications be fore New Zealand closin; dates. The slack left by fewei Malaysian students permittee next year would not be taker up by students front othe countries, he said.
