Cricket opened up
By Alan Graham, NZPA staff correspondent Lyallpur A declaration by Zaheer Abbas with his side nine runs behind on the first innings yesterday, opened up the three-day match between the touring New Zealand cricketers and a Punjab Invitation XI. Zaheer's side made 221 for six declared in reply to New Zealand's 230 all out and at tea on the second day New Zealand was 55 for one in its second innings. The batsman out was Geoff Howarth, who made the 22 runs he needed to bring up his 5000 runs in first-class cricket. He was well-caught at deep point when cutting hard at the opening bowler, Sikander Bakht. Glenn Turner was batting well on 29, his highest first class score of the tour so far though he made 67 in the one-day game. Earlier New Zealand dismissed Pervez Mir., bowled through the gap by David O’Sullivan in the first over after lunch, but the 22-year-old Moshin Khan went on to compile a well-hit 123 before being caught behind off O’Sullivan. The New Zealand bowlers performed well yesterday to havfe the Punjab XI 169 for four
wickets by lunch on the second day of the three-day game. With the pitch giving little assistance the tourists did well to take two early wickets, including that of the test player, Zaheer, and to take two more wickets before lunch. Especially New Zealand seemed delighted to be given two lbw decisions after getting none on the first day. NEW ZEALAND I'lrst innings G. M. Turner b Salim Altaf 15 G. P. Howart b Pervez Mir 34 J. M.
