Sorenson to play for Wigan
PA Auckland The Kiwi second-rower, Kurt Sorensen, (19) will play the rugby league offseason with the English club, Wigan. He is not certain when he will be leaving but Wigan wants him as soon as possible. He will not be available to play for his Auckland club. Mount Wellington, again this season. , Sorensen, Auckland’s player of the year this season, must be back by March 31 to prepare for the 1977 club season. The prospect of a 19-month season does not worry him. Sorensen, who was keen to play in England last summer after the international championship matches in Britain and France, has been negotiating to play in England for several months.
“Negotiations broke down and I wasn’t getting anywhere,” he said. “Then Wigan rang me up out of the blue. They heard I was willing to go and asked me my weight and height. “The chairman of the board told me it wasn't their policy to accept players from overseas for such a short time but they would make an exception for me.” The terms, which included a return air ticket, were “reasonable.” Sorensen said he was keen to play in England because “I like the English style and I think I can learn a lot.
