Heathcote shooting ban likely
The Heathcote County Council will support a move to have the lower reaches of the Heathcote River declared a closed game area. It will also erect signs on its own property in the area, advising that shooting is prohibited.
A letter to the council from the local branch of the Forest and Bird Society had expressed concern about shooting each game season between Tunnel Road and the river’s lower reaches. The Combined Estuary Association has also asked the council to make every effort: to ensure that shooting is prohibited on land in the area owned and administered by the council. The council’s finance and administration committee yesterday decided to tell the association that it is investigating a complaint about shooting in the area, and that a reply is awaited from the police. ’
