Lights will cut risk to cyclists

The hazards of approaching or leaving Hagley Park on bicycles should be reduced soon.

Within a week, new cycle/ pedestrian traffic signals could be ready at the intersection of Deans Avenue and Kilmarnock Street, which is on a major cycle route from the city centre to the University of Canterbury. A narrow detection lane will be placed at the left side of Kilmarnock Street to work the signal when a cyclist passes over it. On tfz- Hagley Park side, where new approach routes have been sealed, cyclists and pedestrians will work the signals with a push button. Signals and new access paths are also being built in the new Harper Avenue median strip, where cycle traffic is heavy to north of Carlton Mill Road.

Although cyclists will not have to dismount to work the Harper Avenue signals, they will have to push a button. Later, if there are enough cyclists, loop detectors may be placed in the access paths. Cycle signals will appear as ordinary traffic lights to

motorists. But, since they will appear in places where there have been no lights, drivers are being asked to take extra care to get into the habit of watching for the new signals.
