N.Z. rally for world series
PA Wellington The Paris-based governing bodv ot world motorsport, the Federation Internationale de I’Automoblle, has approved the Radio New Zealand International rally as one o£ the rounds in the 1977 world rally championship series. The Rally Organisers' Association of New Zealand said in a statement that the international federation had approved the Wel-lington-Auckland rally scheduled for early May next year as a world rally championship event. The New Zealand event will be sandwiched between the East African Safari rally in Kenya in April and the Acropolis rally in Greece next June, the statement said.
The world championship consists of 11 events comprising eight In Europe and three outside, of which one is traditionally the East African Safari. In 1977 one round will be in South America and the other in New Zealand.
•‘This international round will give New Zealand drivers who don’t rank at all internationally a chance to find out how good they really are,” the manager of R.O.A.N.Z. (Mr Murray Thompson) said in London. “New Zealand car manufacturers have given us a lot of support but until now we haven’t been able to get much from their parent companies. But the world championship round has made them Immediately interested.” Twenty-five overseas drivers are expected to compete in the New Zealand round, in which they will be able to chalk up points for the world championship.
