Youngster home first
PA New Plymouth A New Plymouth junior cyclist, John Allen, aged 17, scooped the pool ahead of his more experienced rivals in the Taranaki professional round-the-mountain cycle road race of 176 km.
In a magnificent solo effort, Allen went on his own 60km from the finish and rode away from the field to win.
Allen started from the 28 min mark in a field of 50 starters. He caught the front markers after passing through Hawera on the homeward journey and left them behind after Eltharn.
Second place went to Jeff Wells, Waitara, from Ross Currie (Timaru), Roy Craig (Christchurch) and veteran Albie Hayward (New I Plymouth).
