Shortage of eports fields
Sir, — I was interested in “The Press” report on October 6 regarding the shortage of sports grounds for Christchurch. The City Council should look at the southeastern suburbs, where there is indeed a paucity of recreational facilities. The land at the head of the Estuary, and the old Ferrymead race-track area should be earmarked open space or made available for recreational purposes, rather than allowing developers to gain control for housing and industry. It is not yet too late for the City Council to obtain this land for open space or for recreational purposes. As the population grows it is the City Council which is the responsible body to see that there is sufficient recreational land for its citizens. — Yours, etc., BERNARD R. HANSEN. October 17,1976.
