Cricket team 193 for 7

NZPA staff corres. Lyallpur

Batting on a well-rolled grassless pitch on which the occasional ball kept low the New Zealand cricketers were 193 for seven at tea on the first day of the three-day match against the Punjab XI at Lyallpur yesterday. The first three batsmen, captain Glenn Turner (15), Geoffrey Howarth (34) and Robert Anderson (1) were all out from balls which kept low and John Parker (24) was caught behind down the leg side on the final ball before lunch.

Andy Roberts and Mark Burgess brought up the 100 after lunch but Roberts was caught lbw to a fairly low ball from Mir. Then New Zealand saw a good stand of 60 in less than an hour between Burgess, who is clearly the in-form batsman of the tour and Warren Lees, who was prepared to wait for the loose bail and hit it. The stand ended with Lees pushing a catch back to Farrukh Zaman, who is in line for a tour of Australia and the West Indies if he bowls well in this game. Lance Cairns was out quickly, snicking a catch to the ’keeper when trying to

cut the medium pacet Farouq Shera. Burgess was in full cry: having made 70 in 140 minutes to tea with useful support in the last half houi from David O’Sullivan.
