John Walker in hospital
PA Auckland The Olympic gold medallist, John Walker, has had an emergency appendix operation and will miss the Sportsman of the Year dinner in Auckland tomorrow night. Although the Middlemore Hospital operation on Saturday night was not straightforward — according to a friend — he was in good condition yesterday.
Walker will miss the dinner however, where he will be a contender to take the award for the second year. The other contender is the New Zealand gold medal hockey team. If Walker does win there
is already a contingency plan to make the presentation to him.
“It will be done very nicely,” said Mr Murray Halberg, himself an Olympic gold medallist and one of the award organisers, yesterday.
“Sportsmen will think it unfortunate that he is in hospital but it is perhaps fortunate he had the operation at this time rather than during the Olympic Games,’ said Mr Halberg. Walker is not expected to be out of hospital before Wednesday. It is understood that he has had appendix trouble for the last two years.
