Derby thrashes Spurs

PA-Reuter London Derby County, without a win in their eight previous football league, games this season, made amends yesterday with an 8-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. In contrast, it was a poor day for the top four teams in the first division table. None of them won and Liverpool leapfrogged from fifth place into the leadership with a 3-1 win against their neighbours, Everton. A Scottish international, Bruce Rioch, led Derby’s slaughter of Tottenham with four goals. Charlie George got two and Rod Thomas and Colin Todd one apiece.

Liverpool, which comfortably beat Everton after taking a two-goal lead in the first 12 minutes, heads the first division table on goal difference from Manchester City, which was held to a scoreless draw at home by Queens Park Rangers, and displaced the leader, Middlesbrough, which lost 3-1 at Birmingham. Two penalties were missed in the match between Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers. A Scottish International, Don Masson, blazed high over the bar when Rangers were awarded a penalty, and an England international, Dennis Teuart shot wide from the spot for City. Middlesbrough, booed by the crowd for rough tactics, went a goal down to Birmingham in eight minutes. They equalised with their first away goal of the season, scored by Phil Boersma, but Birmingham took command in the second half.
