‘Favour’ at knife-point

PA Palmerston North A Taihape toll operator had a trip at knife-point in his own car after he went to investigate a disturbance outside the toll exchange on Saturday evening. He escaped by jumping from the moving car, and was not injured — but the car and the offender were still missing yesterday. The toll operator was working at 10.50 p.m. when he hard a noise next door to the exchange at the rear of a hotel, and went to investigate.

He was confronted by a man who asked him to do him a favour. The toll operator explained that he was working, and could not help. But then the man produced a knife, held it to the operator’s throat, and demanded to use his car.

The operator refused, but was forced at knife-point to get in the car and show the man how to drive it.
