C.B.H.S. crew has yachting win
Christchurch Boys’ High School took the lead, subject to confirmation, in the annual Peter Mander Trophy interschools* yachting series when its representatives, Phillip Penney and Stewart Watson, won the third heat at the Estuary yester-
day. Penney and Watson eventually won by a wide margin but they had trailed Craig Erickson and Chris Brailsford (Kaiapoi High Schnol) for most of the opening leg, before slipping around the mark with a Ssec advantage. From that point, Penney and Watson settled down to leave their rivals well astern. The strongest challenge was issued by Nicholas Richardson and Paul Claybanger. (Hagley High School), who spoiled their chances of a high placing bymisreading the course. The other Hagley crew, Colin Richardson and 7 Raymond Stevens, finally claimed second position, and Erickson and Brailsford managed to beat Sandra Hines and Lyn Holland (Linwood High School) for third by just The second and third boats were involved in a collision in a port-starboard incident, but no protests were issued.
Neal Buckley, of the Mount Pleasant club, also relished the light-to-moderate north-easterly conditions, to win the first heat of the Canterbury P-class championshp for the Graham Mander Trophy.
However, his lead at the first mark was more than cancelled out by Michael Bamford and Peter Clark before the fleet reached the tripod. Buckley slipped ahead again on course for the bottom mark, and Clark settled into the second position that he held to the end. Gregor Bowater moved into third on the final beat.
