Monowai still unbeaten
Monowai A maintained its unbeaten record in the senior women's softball competition on Saturday, when it had an easy 12-1 win over Burnside B. In other games, Bumside A looked Ukelv to beat Monowai B in five innings, but Monowai recovered in its fifth to force the games to seven innings. Aorangi held a slender lead against United until the fourth Innings, but succumbed to batting pressure in United's fifth. The match between Glasskraft and Western Suburbs was postponed to a later date. Results were:— United 12, Aorangi 6 Bumside A 17, Monowai B 8 Monowai A 12, Burnside B 1 Monowai B v. Burnside A At the start of its fifth innings, Monowai trailed Burnside, 15-2, but it staged a magnificent batting recovery to go through the order and score five runs, and deprive Burnside of an early end to the game. Burnside scored five runs in its first innings, including a home run by Kathleen Noonan. It added two more runs in its second innings, Susannah Carroll scoring her second of the game. Errors in its third inlngs allowed
Burnside four runs, and three in its fourth innings. Another run in the fifth and two in tne seventh completed Burnside's tally. After its fifth innings recovery, Monowai failed to score in the sixth, but Alison Smith added one in the seventh.
Monowai A v. Burnside B Burnside scored its only run of the game in the first innings when Jane Earnshaw scored on a double base hit by Lynda Shepherd. Only three other batters made base in the remainder of the game. Scoring three runs in its first Innings, one by Ann Wansbrough in the second, and scoreless in the third, Monowai did not have a great advantage. However, it fought back well with two batters out in the fourth innings, and scored three runs with Bev Makinson, Nancy Beale, Vicki Martin and Margaret Machirus prominent with the bat. United v. Aorangi Aorangi’s field fell apart in United's fifth innings and lost
any chance of winning the game. United entered the fifth innings trailing by a run, but Lynette Wilson evened the scores on an error.
With two batters out and one runner on base, United forced a host of errors in the Aorangi field, and seven runners scored before e innings ended. United was scoreless in its sixth innk'f&rlier, Aorangi had fought back well after United scored four runs in its first innings. Aorangi, with Gladys Kara and Kiri Heagney prominent, scored four runs in its second innings.
Michelle Hudson added a run for Aorangi in its third Innings and gave it the lead. It could not continue its good showing, and scored only one more run in three innings—by Christine Clothier in the sixth.
Results of senior B games:— Burnham 18, Teachers’ College 17; Burnside 12, Kaiapoi 11; United 14, Aorangi 4; Lyttelton 14, Glasskraft 5.
