President proud of his Corriedales

The president of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association is Mr E. K. Millar, of “Calrossie,” Killinchy. Mr Millar has been a member of the association for 30 years. He is a stud breeder and an exhibitor of Corriedale sheep. Born and brought up in the district, Mr Millar took up farming as a “rehab” settler after the second World War.

His proprety was originally the Nixon Estate. He describes it as a medium to light country and in conjunction with his son, Douglas, he runs a mixed programme — sheep, fat-

tening of beef, and cropping. It is a point of more than passing interest that he named his property Calrossie, and he confirmed this week that he adapted it from the name of a famous Scottish herd of beef Shorthorn cattle. But he has closer links with Scotland than that, for his wife is also a Scot. Mr Millar is justifiably proud of his Corriedale stud flock. It was founded and developed with advice from the late Mr Harold Sidey, of Hawarden. It carries a large amount of Longbeach blood. In a field which is

known for Its keen competition, Mr Millar’s flock has made considerable progress. He received $3lOO for one of his rams at the last Christchurch stud ram fair, and he has obtained the top price at the Christchurch flock ram fair on two occasions. Mr Millar will be exhibiting some stud sheep at tomorrow’s show, and he will also be represented at the Chrsitchurch show next month. Mr Millar said this week he expected this year’s show to be a good show, even although the spring had been later.
