Beef market may go
NZPA-Reuter Manila, Australia and New Zea-! land mav soon lose a lucrative market for beef in thei Philippines as it becomes in-; creasingly self-sufficient in meat production, according to the president of the Philippines Integrated Meat Corporation (Mr Roberto Sabido). Beef imports would be totally phased out within two to three years under a scheme to provide Philippines cattle breeders with an assured market and to conserve foreign exchange, he said yesterday. President Marcos last July ordered the centralisation of meat imports, which are now handled by the meat corporation, though the Philippines Association of Supermarkets seeks permission to make its own. Australia, according to Philippines statistics, sold just over S4.BM worth of beef to the Philippines last year and New Zealand, more than SI.6M. More than 5405.000 worth came from the United States, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Japan. The Under-Secretary to
the New Zealand Minister of Agriculture (Mr Bolger) said that his Government was disappointed to lose any meat market. However, he noted that Philippines beef imports would be phased out within two to three years. “A lot can happen in two to three years,” he said. Controls limiting lowerpriced beef imports from Australia and New Zealand, effective at midnight on Sunday, were also announced yesterday by the Canadian Minister of Agriculture (Mr Eugene Whelan), ,the Canadian press reported [in Ottawa.
Canadian officials have conferred in Washington to ascertain the impact of President Ford’s action last week imposing an import quota of 1.23 M lb of beef, affecting 21 countries.
i As from Sunday, individual import permits will replace a blanket quota with no limit; and the new Canadian system will allow the . Government there to shape imports to the state of the ' already-troubled domestic . beef industry. ! There was a real possibility of Australian and New
Zealand beef shipments being diverted from the United States market to Canada, a Canadian cattle man said.
