Europium one of the best in training
Europium showed a turn of speed in training at Riccarton yesterday that might have a big bearing on the result of the Charles McDonald Memorial, first leg of the Geraldine Racing Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow. In the hands of her race rider, Paul Thistoll, Europium ran 1600 m on the inside of the trial grass in 1:43.2, the last 800 in 50.6.
Europium galloped soon after her race rivals, Deep Mystery and Cappello, also ran pleasingly over the same distance in 1.43, the last 800 in 51.2.
Deep Mystery ran keenly for his race rider, Graeme Mein, early, and Cappello lid well to remain alongside. Cappello had the outside running. Other gallops by candidates for feature races at the Geraldine meeting: 1600 m: Joint Effort 1:51.4, last 800 53.4. 1400 m: Classic Legend and Karnak 1:32.6, last 800 51.8. 1200 m: Lady Lucifer 1.19, last 800 51.9. 800 m: Salvaro 50 (finishing 1200 m). Surge Again 50. Jivan 48.8, Ruy Lopez and Entourage 48.4.
