What price Westport for tourists?
Staff correspondent Westport One Westport resident sees very clearly the need for better promotion of Westport and Buller. While browsing through an Auckland bookshop recently he came across the 1976-77 edition of “New Zealand on $lO a day.” He flicked the pages to see what praise there was for his home town, but all he found was a short reference, on page 151, in the Nelson-Grejinouth section, which read: "The only major town featuring lunch spots en route Is Westport, a flat bleached-out mining town centred on a dusty main street that detracts in its man-made clutter from the glory with whic’ God has gifted the surroundings.” The cover of the book showed the notation "Prepared for Air New Zealand.**
