Complaint about poll in Heathcote
Mr J. M. McKenzie, trailing by three votes in the Heathcote County Council election for the Cashmere Riding, has lodged a complaint against the declaration of the result by the returning officer (Mr K. D. Stills). On Wednesday, Mr R. J. Cunningham was declared elected, with 283 votes. Mr McKenzie was shown as having 280 votes.
Mr McKenzie said last evening that he had 14 days from Wednesday in which to ask for a magisterial inquiry. He wanted time to study the position, because he was not satisfied that the correct procedure had been observed by Mr Stills in disallowing six special votes. ■ “There are a number of features in the disallowing of these votes which need investigation, and I want time to do that. That is why I have lodged a complaint with Mr Stills,” he said.
