Wairau bridge derestricted
The speed restriction on the Wairau River bridge on State highway 1 between Picton and Blenheim will be removed, according to the resident engineer of the Ministry of Works and Development at Nelson (Mr J H. Ball). A load restriction, later; made a speed restriction.; was put on the bridge after l fine cracks appeared in the! concrete beams. Tests have] shown that these are not I sufficiently serious to war-| rant restrictions for Class 1! traffic. Mr Ball said that a restriction would continue on overloads. and while strengthening would eventually be needed, restrictions could be removed for normal traffic, saving for other! work money that had been designated for strengthening.
