Comalco raising capacity
Because of the improving market for aluminium in Australia and overseas, Comalco, Ltd, will proceed immediately with the completion of the first half of the new No. 4 potline at its smelter at Bell Bay, Tasmania.
The new half-line of furnaces will add 18,900 tonnes of primary metal capacity per annum, bringing the plant’s total installed capacity to 114,500 tonnes. The new production will be used to service export markets. The expansion will include expenditure on billet casting, homogenising, and sawing facilities, and will cost sAust9.BM. It should be completed by July 1, 1977.
Installation of the new half-line was started several years ago, but because of a severe downturn in the world and local aluminium markets, construction was suspended in 1975.
