Plural democracy

Sir, — The naivete — to mention but one deficiency — of those who profess to see merit in the odious system of apartheid is well illustrated 1-y the suggestion of South Africa’s Minister of Information that a change of name to “plural democracy” be adopted. Such name change, Dr Mulder assured his audience, would not involve any change in race policies but would imply merely “a re-appreciation of terminology.” It seems that the Boer mentality, nurtured by the tenets of the Dutch Reformed Church, may not have changed greatly since the days of President Kruger who, I seem to recall from my early history books, insisted unto his death-bed that the world was flat. — Yours, etc., GRAHAM RHIND.
