Armaments race

Sir, — I’d like to support Jane Ross. R. S. James merely regurgitates simplistic material fed us over the years. He applauds United States arrogance in seeking to be the world’s policeman, but can he cite one historical period when an armament stockpile was not sooner or later used? This present lot must not be, and New Zealand is a small enough country, and the right shape, to be able to do the necessary thing: be seen to stick its neck out and cast away the nuclear umbrella; for reliance on this monstrously evil device, and on the warped political philosophy that produced it and continues to brandish it, offers ultimately only the kiss of death. — Yours, etc., E. de LACEY.
