Good cycling record

By

RAY CAIRNS

Though Papanui is fielding, for the first time sines 1968, only one rider with previous experience in the Hope Gibbons 40 km team time trial championship at Levin today, its -csord in that period makes it a team to be feared. The survivor is Kevin Basher, strangely the youngest in the five-man team, but it has in the captain, Dave Hewson, a man well versed

in teams racing experience. Hewson has alreadv been a member of a championshipwinning 100 km team, and Basher’s two fellow juniors, James Sampson and Toni Home, are rich in teams’ racing experience, admittedly mostly at novice level. The other member of the team is John de Gamham, unavailable for the local event and sure to add strength. Canterbury, for the first time, is represented by two clubs. The fledgling Hornby club will be represented L y Gary Radbumd, Steve Candy, Craig Hawtin, Greg Cumming and Bruce Brunton.

It was beaten, by a minute and a half, by Papanui in the Canterbury event and the failure to draft either Paul Robinson or Jim Tabak into the squad suggests it will be hard-pressed to close that gap. Quite the strongest opposition to South Island teams appears to be presented by Point Chevalier, of Auckland, abounding in Richards. Jamie, Michael and lan are all in the team, along with Grant Matheson and Hugh Gillbanks. But the mere presence of si many of the fiercely competitive brothers may prove Pt Chevalier’s undoing.
