The applicants must be registered in New Zealand before commencing duty and must hold a practising certificate. Porirua Hospital is the major psychiatric hospital for the Wellington region. Average occupied beds are currently 1050 and admission rate is 800 per year. There have been many recent changes and developments in the organisation of services both within the hospital and in psychiatric community services. There are vacancies for doctors to undertake general medical duties, or to join in the psychiatric training which is currently being developed in collaboration with the University Department of Psychiatry in Wellington. Thus there are opportunities, either for an older doctor wanting a satisfying change from the round of private practice, or for a younger doctor wishing to increase his knowledge and experience of psychiatry, or to take up psychiatry as a career. Applications would also be considered for parttime appointments from local general practitioners wishing to extend their experience. Appointees would be graded as Medical Officers of Specialist Scale with conditions of appointment in accordance with the Hospital Determination for Medical Officers.
