Islanders told to go

A total of 1281 Pacific Island overstayers who registered under the Government’s stay of proceedings have so far been refused permanent residence in New Zealand. Announcing this yesterday, the Minister of Immigration (Mr Gill) said that by last Friday 2346 of the 4647 applications had been examined- Permanent residence had been recommended for 1065 of them and the remainder would have to return to the

Islands within the next three to six months. Mr Gill said all cases were being considered on their individual merits and it was not possible to predict what proportion would ultimately be permitted to stay. Most of the overstayers refused residence were single people or males with dependent relatives in their home countries, Mr Gill said in a statement. Most of the group had arrived during the past two years.
