Paying their way

Sir, — There appears to be no provision in the New Zealand scene for service, for those things that are not financially viable i.e., return a profit or sufficient money to make them pay their way. It would seem that the measure of all things in New Zealand is money. The Rangatira (“The Press”, September 16) is only one example of New Zealand’s pragmatic attitude to anything that fails to pay its way financially. The whole attitude of financial viability permeates the present Government behaviour. To cut subsidies (the only way our economy can support services and needs that refuse to make a profit) is financially justifiable. To fail to provide satisfactory alternatives for those who suffer as a result is inexcusable. If we must have money to pur-

chase anything and everything there should be a provision for a fund to insure against the disserviceable effects of the profit axe. — Yours, etc., L. J. ROBINSON. September 16, 1976.
