Radio New Zealand is to get a new four-storey building for its Christchurch headquarters. Within the next two years, all Radio New Zealand departments in Christchurch will be housed under the roof of a new building, on the corner of Chester Street and Durham Street, instead of being

spread round five buildings in the city. Details of the new building were announced to Radio New Zealand staff yesterday by the chairman of the board of Radio New Zealand (Mr P. Downey). The board met in Christchurch this week. Although most of the building will be leased to

Radio New Zealand, part of it will be leased to other tenants. The additional space would provide room for Radio New Zealand to expand, said Mr Downey. There had to be public service radio broadcasting, and the decision to go ahead with the new building had been made with

careful thought for the future, he said. The matter had been discussed with the new chairman of the Broadcasting Council (Mr R. Jarden). It was particularly important that the public should have access to the building, and should actually be encouraged to visit their local radio station, said Mr Downey.
