Bayi wins 5000m
NZPA-Reuter Siena The Tanzanian athletic star, Filbert Bayi, provided a highlight at the annual “friendship” athletics meeting in Italy, otherwise dominated by American victories. Bayi won the 5000 metres race, finishing five seconds ahead of Luigi Zarcone (Italy). with Russia’s Genalis Kosariev third. Bayl’s time was 14min o.4sec.
Mike Boit, of Kenya, failed in a new attack on the 800 metres world record, of Imin 43.75ec but won in Imin 46.955ec.
Willie Davenport (U.S.) won the high hurdles, Jim Bolding the 400 metres hurdles and their compatriot, Tom Woods, took the high jump.
Professional dies.—An Australian golf professional, Tony Charlton, aged 24, died in Brisbane when his car crashed into a bridge and he was impaled through the chest.
