An apple a day

Sir, — I wonder why New Ze.aland has become a cheap labour area, with a standard of living, materially, less than half that in corrupt America, where age beneficiaries are rich compared with tradesmen here. Then I heard that “Granny Smith” are two dirty words in California, because the great Gravenstein area is suffering because Australian and New Zealand apples are dumped there. Gravensteins have been forced down to 3c a pound on the market there, where 6c would give them a decent return. With the filthy Granny Smiths fetching 26c a pound at our local shop, I must conclude that I am a victim of Muldoonery at its worst. Recently, a local butcher offered fresh half lambs at $6. Today, his “special” is frozen half lamb for $7.50. So much for frozen prices.— Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. September 15, 1976.
