Scott Base traverses
New Zealanders, using dog teams, will make three traverses from Scott Base this month. One of about 40 miles will be across the annual sea ice in McMurdo Sound to Marble Point. The party will select a route along which Americans and New Zealanders towing large sleds will later be able to haul fuel supplies for helicopters operating in the Dry Valley. The other two will go to Cape Royds and to Cape Evans, to inspect the historic huts and to see what maintenance might be necessary for the New Zealand Antarctic Society’s two caretakers during the summer.
