Tides threaten 20 more houses
’A Wellington Some freak high tides on the Gold Coast could destroy another 20 homes. Huge spring tides, and strong onshore winds have cut vast chunks out of seaside properties at Raumati and Paekakariki, north of Wellington. On Monday night one old house broke in half and toppled into the sea after its foundations were washed away. Of its foundations disappear. Tides in the area were gentler yesterday than they have been in the past three days. But the Kapiti Borough Council engineer (Mr A. W. Stewart) said last night that protective banks must be built in front of 20 homes urgently. He said more high tides were due in the middle of next week. “Provided people take measures to protect the banks that are left, those houses should be all right,” he said.
