Treatments to end

NZPA Vail, Colorado The breast cancer treatments which Betty Ford has been receiving for the last two years will end in October, her doctor said, United Press International reported. William Lukash, the White House physician, said there had been no recurrence of cancer and so doctors will discontinue the chemotherapy which the First Lady had undergone since her breast cancer surgery on Seprember 28, 1974.

Mrs Ford learned she had cancer a little more than a month after President Ford took office. She had her right breast removed in an operation at Bethesda Naval Hospital. However, Mrs Ford has been showing the effects of a severe flareup of a chronic osteoarthritic neck ailment since she arrived in Vail last Friday. Mrs Ford, aged 59, had a recurrence of her 13-year-old pinched nerve condition a week ago. It was aggravated at the G.O.P. national convention, where she was constantly in the spotlight, waving and lifting her arms.

She has been walking stiffly and appears to be wearing a neck collar. Her face looked puffy but her press secretary, Sheila Rabb Weidenfeld, said Mrs Ford is not taking drugs.

To relieve the pain, Mrs Ford has hot packs applied to her shoulder, and massages.
