New committee will examine benefit
|PA Wellington A committee of six to inquire into the domestic pur- ! poses benefit was announced ; yesterday by the Minister of (Social Welfare (Mr Walker). The committee will be chaired bv Mr J. R. P. Horn. S.M., of Wellington. The other members are: Mrs MaiI rehau Cole. Auckland: Miss [Judith Christensen. Wellington; Miss Margaret Cooper, [Wellington: Mr George Brocklehurst, Auckland; and Captain Rodney Knight, Christchurch. Mr Walker said that the Government was concerned about the rapid growth in the number of people receiving domestic purposes benefits, and the social' trends indica-j ted by such growth.
The committee’s terms of I reference required it to review benefits, and to repori on any changes in social security legislation, policy or procedure which appeared desirable. The committee had been asked to report by the end of October. New legislation could be introduced later in the year
[to tighten up present procedures, Mr Walker said. The I committee’s recommendaitions would be considered by [the Cabinet, along with recommendations from the [Cabinet committee studying the family unit.
