Bracewell off to Masterton
Doug Bracewell, one of the most promising spin bowlers in New Zealand, will be playing his cricket in Masterton next summer, according to a New Zealand Press Association report. Although not a regular member of the Canterbury XI, Bracewell represented the province at both Rothmans tournament and firstclass levels and enjoyed considerable success for Old Collegians in club competition.
The transfer of Bracewell, who is expected in Masterton early in October, provides the Wairarapa district with a third recent notable gain. The former test batsman, Mike Shrimpton, and lan Snook, who has captained Central Districts, will also be available for the minor association’s representative side. Bracewell was a member of the Canterbury squad which decisively won the Rothmans under-23 series in 1974-75. A few weeks earlier, he had played for Canterbury against Northern Districts and among his four victims in his Plunket Shield debut were Shrimpton, John Parker and Rod Fulton. He made three appearances
in the Shell Series last season. and his seven first-class wickets have been obtained at an average of 40.8. In three innings, he has scored 23 runs without being dismissed.
In the winter months, Bracewell turns his sporting attention to rugby league. A stand-off half, he ’became one of the young Rolleston club’s first provincial representatives when he was chosen for the Canterbury senior second division team.
