Fijians win hockey
Ashburton women’s hockey team became the seventh victim of the touring Fijian women’s side when they met in Ashburton yesterday afternoon. Fiji has won seven of the eight games played on the tour, losing only to Nelson, 4-2. Fiji won yesterday’s game, 4-1. Two of the touring team’s goals were scored by the captain, and centreforward, Julia King, one of which came from a penalty stroke.
The other two goals came from a penalty stroke by Laisa Siqila, and Andi Mesulame scored the only goal in the second half.
Ashburton’s lone goal was scored by Janice Mac Kay after about fifteen minutes of play. The goal, from a penalty stroke, came after Ashburton missed three opportunities to score during the first 10 minutes.
Ashburton’s goalie, Jan Boothroyd, made some good saves and was partly responsible for lowering the Fijians’ scoring average over the tour. The Fijian coach (Mr Max Bay) said before the match that his . team had scored an average of seven goals per match in the seven games they played previously.
