University sports hit by fog

The late arrival of two teams at this year’s Universities winter tournament caused problems for the organisers. Auckland and Waikato, scheduled to arrive on Sunday evening, were held up by fog and did not reach Christchurch until yesterday morning and late yesterday afternoon respectively. This forced the organisers to rearrange much of the programme, and it is likely that Waikato will have to default one game. Results of the first day:—■ Netball: Otago 21, Victoria 16; Massey 44, Canterbury 26; Victoria 32, Auckland 21; Otago 29, Canterbury 16. Soccer: Canterbury 2, Lincoln 0; Massey 2, Canterbury 0; Victoria 4, Lincoln 0; Massey 3, Victoria I; Otago 2, Canterbury Table tennis: Canterbury 13, Victoria 8; Canterbury 18, Massey 3; Massey 9, Waikato 3; Auckland 20, Waikato 1.

Women’s hockey: Otago 12, Victoria 0; Otago 4. Massey 0; Canterbury 5, Lincoln 1. Rugby league: Victoria 46, Massey 0; Victoria 20, Canterbury 6; Auckland 45, Otago 0. Basketball.—Men’s: Otago A 101, Canterbury 83; Victoria 63, Canterbury 52; Otago A 119, Otago B 77; Massey 59, Auckland 45. Women’s: Canterbury 67, Victoria 31; Otago A 78, Otago B 21; Canterbury 73, Otago B 41; Otago A 80, Massey 22. In the motor trial, Canterbury leads with 15 points, with Otago second with six.

In the small-bare rifle shoot, an excellent performance from Canterbury’s Malcolm Barth, scoing 200.19 out of a possible 200.20, has put his team into the lead.
